Personal Tips on Linguistics PhD application
My personal journey in applying for fully funded Phd positions in Linguistics in Hong Kong (only in Chinese)
As an unfilial little kid, I nitpicked my immigrant family's Cantonese quite a lot (only deep in my head, of course :) But what I did not realize until my last year of college was that there is an area of science that allows you to study human speech sounds systematically and scientifically. Naturally, I applied for an MA in linguistics at HKU where I found my life-long passion - phonetics. But as I transitioned to this new area of study, the obstacles and challenges I encountered as a former art major had slowed me down inevitably.
What got me through my struggling journey and eventually landed on a PhD offer were the abundant resources published by generous and genius linguists. I want to be a part of this community. So here I want to post useful materials that can help you step into the world of human speech sounds - as I am also doing so myself.
Here are some of my own sharings and useful online materials for budding phoneticians
